Design is understood as the appearance of all or a part of a product, which derives from the characteristics of, in particular, the lines, contours, colors, shape, texture or material of the product itself or its ornamentation.
The registration of a design confers its holder the right to prevent third parties from its reproduction or imitation. Since it is a business asset that increases the commercial value of a company and its products, it contributes to strengthen its competitive position and obtaining an improvement in profits.
Community designs are registered at the EUIPO and grants its holder protection in the following countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic Czech, Romania and Sweden.
It is granted for five years from the date of filing, being able to renew it for equal periods up to a maximum of 25 years.
